History of Lal Bagh Palace Indore
The current 45-room palace is on a 76-acre plot of land and was built in three stages. Starting with Tukojirao Holkar II, who bought this land in 1886, and ending with his grandson, Tukojirao Holkar III, who finished it in 1926. It was built in the style of the Italian Renaissance Revival. It used to have a 20-acre rose garden, and Triggs of Calcutta modeled its main gates after those at Buckingham Palace.
After Tukojirao Holkar III died in 1978, his third wife, an American named Sharmishtha Devi (who used to be called Nancy Anne Miller), moved out. The palace was then turned into a museum, and a fire destroyed most of the first floor. In the 1980s, the palace fell into disrepair, and its antiques were often stolen until the state government bought it for Rs 64.46 lakh in 1987.

This is a huge property in Indore that is right next to a river. Big Campus and Plenty of Parking. There is a small fee to get in, and you can’t bring your phone or camera inside.
The palace is very big, and you can see a big meeting room, a bedroom, a dining room, and a place to relax. Animal hunted down in that time period is a fun place for kids to visit. There is a planetarium inside, but it is closed right now, and the staff doesn’t know when it will open again.
The nearby Champa Bavdi and the very old Shiv temple on campus are also great places to visit.
Overall, it was a good place to go, and I’m looking forward to going back after the renovations are done.
